How Often Should You Get Your Car Detailed?

One of the most common questions we get at The Auto Spa is simple: "How often should I detail my car?" The honest answer depends on where you live — and if you're in Southern Utah, that answer is probably more often than you think.

The General Rule — And Why Southern Utah Is Different

In mild climates with moderate sun, moderate humidity, and clean air, a professional full detail every 6–12 months is a reasonable standard for maintaining a vehicle's appearance and value. But Southern Utah is not a mild climate. St. George ranks among the hottest and sunniest cities in the United States. The combination of 300+ sunny days, summer temperatures regularly exceeding 110°F, fine red Navajo sand dust, and alkaline mineral deposits accelerates every form of paint, interior, and exterior degradation.

For Washington County residents, we recommend a professional exterior detail every 3–4 months and a full detail (interior + exterior) at least twice per year. If your vehicle is parked outdoors, driven on dirt or gravel roads, or exposed to sand from Sand Hollow, Little Creek, or other OHV areas, move that schedule closer to every 2–3 months for exterior work.

By Vehicle Type and Use

Daily Drivers

Your daily commuter takes the most abuse — UV exposure, road grime, bird droppings, bug splatter, and the constant accumulation of fine dust. For a typical daily driver in the St. George area, we recommend: exterior wash and detail every 3 months, full interior/exterior detail every 6 months. If you have a ceramic coating applied, properly maintained coated vehicles can stretch their detail interval to every 4–5 months because contaminants don't bond as readily to the surface.

Off-Road and Trail Vehicles

If your truck, Jeep, or UTV gets used at Sand Hollow, Zion, or any of Washington County's trails, detail promptly after every trip. Red sand and clay are highly abrasive and if left to dry on painted surfaces or worked into upholstery fibers, they cause damage that's expensive to undo. A post-trail exterior rinse and monthly professional detail is the minimum for trail vehicles.

Weekend Vehicles and Classics

Even cars stored in a garage accumulate dust, off-gassing from plastics and carpets, and moisture-related issues. A detail every 6–8 months is recommended for show cars or weekend drivers, with special attention to interior conditioning to prevent UV-baked plastic cracking when the car does go out.

Fleet Vehicles

Commercial vehicles are ambassadors of your brand. A monthly exterior detail and quarterly full detail maintains a professional image and protects the resale value of your fleet investment. The Auto Spa offers flexible fleet scheduling with volume pricing — contact us for a custom program.

Signs You're Overdue for a Detail

  • Paint feels rough or gritty to the touch even after washing
  • Water no longer beads on the hood — it sheets or sticks
  • You can see swirl marks or a hazy dullness in direct sunlight
  • Interior surfaces feel sticky, smell musty, or show visible grime buildup
  • Trim and plastic surfaces are fading or turning gray
  • Headlights are yellowed or cloudy

How Ceramic Coating Changes the Equation

One of the best investments you can make for long-term vehicle maintenance in Southern Utah is a professional ceramic coating. A properly applied 3 or 5-year ceramic coating creates a hydrophobic, UV-resistant layer that repels water, dust, bird droppings, and contaminants more effectively than any wax. It makes every wash faster and less damaging, extends the interval between professional details, and provides genuine protection against the desert environment. Many of our ceramic-coated customers tell us their car looks better after 2 years of coating than it did with regular waxing after 3 months.

The Bottom Line

For most Southern Utah vehicles: exterior detail every 3 months, full detail every 6 months. Trail vehicles and daily outdoor parkers: move that to every 2–3 months exterior. Apply a ceramic coating to stretch those intervals and dramatically improve protection between services.
